What is the pick of your cigars for May 2010?

Which is the one that rang your bell?

Mine... Upmann Connoisseur No 1 Jun 08. Stunning class and balance. Surprised me no end.

I actually had two epifanies this month...

H.Upmann Magnum 46 - Complexity above and beyond!

Hoyo de Monterrey Des Dieux - Smooth, relaxing, chocolate pudding with cream. Wow!

Now I need more of both!! :D

For me it was a Partagas D5 EL 2008.

This is a cigar that showed strength that normally would be too much 'in your face' for my own liking however I found great respect for this and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

It had a beautiful pre-lit aroma and once fired up, varied tastes of spice, wood, honey and chocolate flavors throughout the entire cigar and whilst the strength intensified and developed, it remained smooth and sweet the entire time which is why I enjoyed this cigar.

The PD5 EL had loads of heavy, thick, chewy smoke with a sweet and spicy/salt taste lingering on the lips. I could have eaten this cigar like a chocolate bar! B)

As such, this is my favourite for May. :D

Partagas de Partagas no. 1 NOV 03

Rich sweet earth, chocolate, cream, and anise.

An 08 Lusitania, and an 08 Monte Sublime get honorable mention.

The Partagas de Partagas actually kind of reminded me of an Upmann Connie 1 in its flavor profile only it was full-bodied and richer.

For me it was a Jose Cueto custom roll, he had yet to name this dark wrapper beauty, and I was lucky enough to get 3 of them from him at La Cabana last January.

That said, I'm enjoying the hell out of the H. Upmann Mag 50's, which Ken Gargett predicted would be the cream of the crop at Festival Habanos 2007. But who would listen to Ken anyway?

That's a tough call, but I'd have to give the nod to a JUN08 ERDM Grandes des Espana that I had the other day. It was the first one out of the box, and the aromas at cold were striking... freshly cut wood, hay, and dried flowers.

This cigar burned and drew perfectly, all the way to a nubbed finish. Overall, the cigar was on the mild side of medium bodied, if that, but the flavors were exceptionally complex and well-balanced. There was vanilla creme, hay, dried flowers, some orange citrus, and a little honey that gave it the quality of warm spice bread right out of the oven.

For such a young cigar, it was remarkably approachable. In fact, I don't know how it could improve with age. Rating? Somewhere in the mid-90's, but this cigar transcended numbers... I was left thinking, "It doesn't get any better than this".

A Bolivar Centenary series, royal corona (or robusto) size. Got it 'cuz it was part of a sampler group. I am NOT a fan of robustos, not even a little bit. After 4 or 5 puffs, it's gone as far as anymore flavor & enjoyability. THIS particular cigar was 1. Sweet & cool to the tongue. 2 Had the maple and raisins aroma of a well aged habana. 3. Was powerful like I don't know what. Another score! 4. And the flavor, taste & aromas lasted throughout the whole thing - all the way down to the nub, which I seldom or never smoke my cigars down to. This stayed cool & sweet, flavorful and non-biting all the way through. I'm hooked. Am looking for Punch Black Prince from SOMEWHERE! THAT one was also right on target and a beautiful, wonderful smoke that I cannot find again!

Took my first stab at the VR line with the Familiar. IMO, great great great cigar. Had everything I imagine a Cuban cigar should have. Not the best smoke, nor my fav or goto, but just a unique experience of what is to be expected when smoking Cuban tobacco.

i told stan when i first met him in hamlet's den (if i recall, we shared an hour or two of bagging kiwis), that he should check out the site. he was against it at the time but silly enough to listen. and that's the thanks!

for the may cigar, without question - and also cigar of the year to date (and yes, rob, i have taken notes with the intention of doing a review) - was a hoyo LE pyramide 03. the first half was as close to a 100 point cigar as i could imagine. the back end faded a little but it started as though i'd hit the mother-lode of rich, dark molten chocolate.

RA Celestiales Fino.

When it comes to enjoyment - this could be my cigar of the year. Its not the tastiest cigar, nor the most refined... but it is the most enjoyable.

A stunning Boli Corona Gicante at a small herf - second from the box. The first was hopelessly plugged so I was a little concerned but this one was spectacular from beginning to end. Rich, smooth, dark chocolate and black coffee with earthy undertones. Voluminous smoke, beautiful wrapper and a great burn. Why can't they all be this good?

Ouch! I too have broken a box of the Hoyo El's from 03 and been enjoying them a bunch. My palate and Ken's seem to have much in common. That's where we part company, however. He's far too socialist for me.

He would be too socialist for Marx.

Although I have always wondered when the protest yells out " The Workers United..... Will Never be Defeated" exactly what a confused ken would do.

to be fair though, i was recently sacked from a long term (unpaid) position on the annual masterclass committee for the brisbane event for sticking up for workers' rights.

i held my ground and insisted that if they didn't relent, they could find someone else. they refused and so i'm no longer on the committee.

bastards revoked my parking space which was the only thing that they gave members of the committee for a year of boring meetings and a weekend of standing on the door and directing the rabble etc. i refused to buckle.

the workers, united, will never be defeated!!!
