BobLobLaw Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Disclaimer: Not a very good review for multiple reasons outlined below. About a month ago I won a Cohiba Robusto at the weekly poker games. No clue on year of production or box codes. Cigar arrived with some wrapper cracks as mailboxes in our apartment as small and the mailman apparently did not want to leave it at the door. . But hey, its a free CoRo, so no complaints. The cigar smelled GLORIOUS. Chocolatey and Mocha are what I recall. Packing cigars for Vegas this past weekend and decided it would be a good time to put this bad boy to fire. Landed Friday night and promptly hit the tables with a few buddies. Great draw and initial tastes were smooth vanilla bean and cream. Maybe a little Cohiba grassiness (I am not experienced enough with Cohibas to know). Very tasty though! Then problems arose, some hideously bad hands when the blackjack shoe was extremely positive really took a hit on me and made me less interested in the smoke. A dealer change was welcomed until the pit boss asked us if we minded putting out the cigars because the new dealer was pregnant. Sidenote: I am a bit conflicted on this. First of all Vegas is not like it used to be. Lighting up a cigar will usually get you dirty looks from the dealers, pit bosses and other players. Although allowed, they clearly do not like it anymore. We do use this to our advantage though as if you get 3-4 guys on a table you can keep the table to yourselves with strategic cigar placement. As for the pregnant dealer, I was initially annoyed, but at the same time for those who know Vegas the dealers are not well off. Its not like they can afford to take off work, and it certainly sucks to work in a smokey environment. In the end I decided it was a rarity and did not make much of a fuss in my head. 20 min later I relit the cigar, purged and we were back on track. Then the wrapper cracks started to act up and the burn was uneven. The smoke I was getting was quite pleasant still with the vanilla flavor and quite a good amount of it which coated the mouth nicely. As I continued to get crushed at the table I decided to put her to bed a bit early and lick my wounds elsewhere. All in all a pretty good cigar! Rest of trip went better, but was playing from behind. Sat I had a fantastic JL #2 while watching the Celtics game. Sat night played in a 70 man poker tourney. Few lucky rivers got me to the final table. Busted out at 7th with QQ when I correctly read a weak hand from a strong raise. A,8 suited. He caught his ace. What was maddening is that 7th paid out $110 ($45 entry) and 15 min later at 4 players left they chopped the pot and everyone took $500! Damm! I have a few other poker cigars that I will try and do better reviews on in the future. Maybe even pick up another one tonight!
sloth Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Sampled a CoRo not too long ago.... for some reason I had low expectations, I think it was from a lousy sigII, but the Robusto suprised me... very good cigar not sure the year but I assume recent. Thanks for the story... my little brother is a little poker nut... He got extremely lucky last week... if i won what he won, i would be clear of debt and have a proper cigar collection.
lemmycaution Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Thanks for the review. It's true that some people give you a hard time about cigars in Vegas. They don't seem to care too much about cigarette smoking but a soon as you light up a cigar, they seem annoyed. Even though you are allowed to smoke, you feel like you're doing something wrong. Cigar Persecution. Oh well...
