Colt45 Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Of Course I mean you, Alzheimers is a terrible thing Colt...let me jog your memory. Oh, that review. And I prefer to think of it as selective memory
Joker Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Have been enjoying your review of some unique cigars in spectacular surroundings - thanks for sharing!! Congratulations to you both, and enjoy the rest of the cruise. All the best Joker
SandmanTR Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Love the updates Doc! Keep 'em coming... ...decisions, decisions. A 1964 Monte #1 or a Cohiba Edicion Limitada Piramide 2010...I would have gone with the Cohiba.
gmoney Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Yes, much to my wife’s amazement, we made it to our 20th Wedding Anniversary cruise! I have been saving up some of my very best to smoke this week. We are on the “Oasis of the Seas” (the world’s largest cruise ship), and I have brought the following to smoke…Cohiba Gran Reserva (FINALLY!!), Davidoff Dom Perignon 1982, Montecristo #1 1964, Partagas 150 Coronas Grandes (Cuban of course), Cohiba Reserva (2003) Esplendido & Robusto. I am transporting these in my 2006 Montecristo travel humidor, and my 2007 H. Upmann Robusto travel humidor. This will be the closest to cigar utopia I have ever come, and yes, I guess my wife can join me on this journey. I will take photos and give reviews over the course of this week for all of you who would like to come with me.-Emil On a side note does anyone know if those travel humidors are still in produciton??? They look really nice.

Puros Y Vino Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Hmmm....the bands on the Montecristo and Davidoff Dom look suspect. They might be fakes. But seriously. Great idea and a great lineup of cigars!! And what a great place to smoke them, on the open seas. Congrats on the 20th.
gersonmorelli Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Well I thought I had a legendary line of of cigars until we went ashore in Costa Maya and I saw things I never knew existed. These make my collection pale in comparison!! I have enclosed a pic of the Cohiba Edicion Limitada Piramide 2010, in a glass top case none the less!! WOW! Then I found a shop with a wonder of cigars, many had perfect small round holes in them, when I dared to ask the merchant if by chance these were beetle holes he reeled in horror, grabbed one of the maduro Cohiba Esplendidos and tapped feverishly on the table to demonstrate only minimal sawdust falling out. Since these were so precious he refused to allow me to photograph these gems so I could show all of you. This collection of fakes brought a feeling to me which started in the pit of my stomach, then slowly rose to the back of my throat. It had hints of bile with a core of stomach acid and vomit! The worst part is people were paying $50-$80 a piece for these specimens!!! :liar:   2 or 3 years ago an Asian fellow ran into one of these and bought it. He posted in the forum to check if anyone had ever tried the aforementioned Cohiba Piramides (at the time they probably had 2006 or 2007 LE rings!). If I'm not mistaken the picture he sent appears in the pictures that rotate in the upper right corner of the forum. It's one with the a funny looking Asian guy wearing round sunglasses looking really happy holding his "unique" glass-top box!

archosaur Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Great thread Doc! Enjoy the cruise, and keep 'em coming!
Alberto_Magnus Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 If one is in a bad mood I'd say to check this thread regularly, it will surely cheer you up!!! Thanks for sharing and happy multiples of 20 years to you and your wife!
edameff Posted May 21, 2010 Author Posted May 21, 2010 (Written May 20, 4:00 pm EST) Now… the Anniversary cigar for the big 2-0. From my selection I thought long and hard which of these would get the honor of the Big Day. It was not an easy decision, but the Davidoff Dom Perignon 1982 was the winner (its reputation just won out). Part of this is because Teddie and I started dating in 1983 (yes a full 7 years before we got married, much to the dismay of her Sicilian father), so this represented life just before her. Today we are docked in Cozumel; the “Gradur of the Seas” is docked next to us. It is a beautiful day, not too hot, but still sunny with a slight breeze. I reach for the Davidoff and study the wrapper, still some light oils left, but most have dissipated over the years. The aroma is very mild; I pierce the head with my punch cutter, and deeply inhale the unlit cigar. A very distinctive taste comes to mind, it is floral in nature. Again the “ping” of my lighter breaks the silence and the golden flame licks the foot of the Davidoff, again great care is placed not to scorch the wrapper. I savor the initial puffs and am greeted with a sweet herbal tea core (my wife described it as “Yummy”, her command of cigar descriptive terms is nothing short of astounding), there are a few floral hints as the unlit taste had foreshadowed. The smoke volume is excellent, and the draw is dead on perfect. After the first inch or so, some tangy sweetness is appreciated with just the slightest background of charred wood notes. It is mild bodied, but leaves nothing lacking in taste, very satisfying, not complex, but well balanced. In the background Jimmy Buffett sings “Beautiful Swimmers” and “Banana Republic” (we are huge Parrotheads if that has not yet become evident). Vahe Gerard has said in several of his book that you do not “smoke” a cigar, you “taste” it, I find this so true as I appreciate this wonder today. The Caribbean breeze picks up slightly as I savor each puff like a condemned man eating his last meal; the velvety smoke continues to caress my taste buds. In stage II and III, a mint tone creeps into the perfectly orchestrated medley. The finish is soft and refreshing; I now have realized the definition that Min Ron Nee describes…Ethereal… I rate this cigar a 99…come on now, if it got 100, what else in life would there be to look forward to???
Cohiba007 Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Fantastic pictures and reviews. Thanks so much for sharing. And happy anniversary
Guest rob Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 wow...! I had an opportunity to buy a box of Dom's about 5 years ago... but decided to buy some Cohiba Sublimes instead. Im kinda regretting that decision....
sloth Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 congrats on the anni! I just did a short cruise a couple of months ago... I've been landlocked all of my life and never really experienced sea-air. I had no idea how allergic I am to my home until my quick little trip to the Bahamas! I think you pick the perfect setting to smoke all of those amazing cigars! Homer couldn't describe a better epic!
edameff Posted May 22, 2010 Author Posted May 22, 2010 I have one more post for today, as bad as the counterfeits were in Costa Maya, I was still not prepared for the onslaught in Cozumel. Every single block a vendor tried to entice the unknowing tourists to purchase the poorest cosmetic fakes I have ever seen. That is why in this backdrop I was completely shocked to find an unexpected treasure. A full sealed box of the elusive Edmundo Dantes. I finally found the one authorized distributor that Puros Y Tabacos has on this island, and amidst the sea of forgeries, a true gem (actually a whole box of them) was found, # 567/600. What a great present for me on my 20 Wedding Anniversary!!!!! By the way, somehow Teddie does not share my ecstasy to the same level about this find. Stay tuned for the review on this baby...
