reg Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Found this the other day in my dad's workshop full of nuts and bolts lol. It seems weird that its in english, so I'm assuming it isn't from the diplo we know and love? Pictures didn't come out great, I'll try to post exactly what is written
cigarros Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I think that this box of "Clear Havana". It's american cigars made from cubans tobacco in Tampa or else where in FL)) Thx for sharing! Very nice!
nivanov Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Yes, this is a clear Havana tin, the bottom of the tin will tell you where (in what state) the cigars were made. (Circa 1920's) Their slogan was, at the sign of the bulldog!
finecigar Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Wow, quite an interesting and unique box. Thanks for sharing.
reg Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 Thanks for the info guys, gonna try to do some more digging, including trying to read the back if I can. Guessing it was likely my grandfathers, very cool gotham, is this your site? http://gotham-cigar-museum.com/havana.aspx Another good indicator as to whether clear Havana tobacco was used would be the location where they were made, Tampa, New York and New Jersey were known to have factories that strictly used Cuban tobacco in their "bonded" warehouses. Clear Havana cigar manufacturing thrived in Tampa, FL, Trenton, NJ, Philadelphia, PA and New York City.............. believe it or not! grandfather came over through ellis island NY and ended up in jersey. good stuff. I only wish there were some cigars left in there lol
Buch0 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Cheers for sharing Reg, definitely would of bewildered me if I found such a thing in my old mans garage.. Great bit of history either way.

nivanov Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Ahem,......correction, it all started in Key West and not Ybor city!
MoeCizlak Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 That's pretty cool. I found THIS in searching John W. Merriam Co. It sounds like they were in NYC which makes sense if you say your grandfather was in Jersey. I'm not able to find out much more than that little snippet but I'll keep searching.

I tried some searching on his name but didn't find much
nivanov Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 John W. Merriam used the slogan "At the sign of the bulldog" and made some popular cigars and advertising items here is an example. Note the old spelling of cigar as "segar" only two vitolas kept the old spelling, Robert Burns & Merriam, the name of J.W. Merriam is on the dogs collar.
reg Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 thats a great looking piece. thank you again for the info! guessing the box probably isnt worth much, but I think i'll go grab it anyway
nivanov Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 At the sign of the bulldog................c.1900 J.W. Merriam advertising.
