Buch0 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Smoking the pipe has long intrigued me since I began smoking cigars, although I am yet to try one. Do any of you guys regularly intertwine the two and what occasion prompts you to light up a pipe instead of a cigar, or vice versa? What are the main differences in the experience compared with smoking a good cigar. From what I understand the tobacco smoked out of a pipe provides much less complexity than a good habanos would, but does it still provide the unique nuances/tastes on the palette?
mkz Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Yes I´m a pipe smoker. Especially now during the winter since I find it too cold for smoking and enjoying my cigars. A long walk in the forrest accompanied by my pipe and dog is a really nice treat during these cold months. I dont really smoke any fancy-pancy pipe-tobacco. Usually I go for my favourite: Borkum Riff Black Cavendish. As for my experience re pipe vs. cigar: Yes the pipe-smoke isnt as complex or strong as the one from a cigar. IMHO much milder and smoother. But then again, im shure it all comes down to what kind of tobacco you smoke. I like the pipe as a substitute but Im longing for the springtime when I can enjoy a real nice cigar again. My wife doesnt complain about stinky smoke when I light up my pipe (she shure does when my habanos is on fire). Sometimes when I get a plugged cigar, Instead of trying to smoke it, I chop it up and mix with my pipe tobacco.
Buch0 Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 So out of curiosity, if you lived somewhere in a much warmer climate and never had to worry about burn issues with your cigars do you think you would still smoke a pipe? I presume it is just a change of pace to a cigar, in that you don't focus too much on the flavours you are experiencing when smoking a pipe, am I right? I find the idea of mixing your chopped up cigar with tobacco and smoking it in a pipe truely fascinating.. Does it taste anything like it would if it were a cigar? I would imagine the smoke would be quite harsh aswell? I feel like buying a pipe and trying this on the weekend

Honestly: If I lived on a warmer place I would probably never turne to the pipe. I find the cold and dry air during the winters here to cause a lot of burn issues on my cigars and affecting the taste. I want to enjoy my cigars thus saving them for the spring, summer and autumn. Actually I havent had a cigar since christmas eve. In a month or two I will probably get an old trailer which I intend to turn into a cigar-room for the cold months. After that ye olde pipe will only come out for my winter walks... I think... but who knows? IMHO you are absolutely right about not having too focus too much on the flavours when smoking a pipe. Therefore the pipe is a really nice companion when out on long walks. For me its hard to concentrate on flavours when having to see were to put my feets in the woods and keeping an eye on my mad dog. I find the idea of mixing your chopped up cigar with tobacco and smoking it in a pipe truely fascinating.. Does it taste anything like it would if it were a cigar? I thought it was a shame to throw away fine cuban tobacco just because it was rolled in a poor manor. Works quite well actually and gives the mild pipe tobacco a nice sting of cuban taste. I havent experience any harsness yet but my current mix is about 70-30 pipe/cigar-tobacco. My mix right now is Borkum Riff and Partagas... One more thing you can do with the pipe is If you got a cigar thats really good and want to smoke the nub beyond were you fingers start to burn. Just put the nub down ye olde pipe and suck (that is if the size of the nub fits the hole of the pipe). Buy a pipe and try!!
LiLo Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 i smoke a pipe as well. I must agree that i smoke a lot more in the winter because of the cold. Its nice to hold onto a warm bowl when its chilly out. I prefer virginia blends but i also like a lot of english and aromatic blends. Right now my favorite is Billy bud by cornell and diehl. Its actually got some maduro cigar leaf in it which makes it very tasty. I like smoking cigars much more first and foremost but i really love the pipe too. I smoke my pipe like 3 times a week whereas i smoke like 15 cigars a week. Its a nice change of pace and very relaxing. The flavors aren't nearly as strong but are very flavorful and smooth. If you are interested in smoking a pipe i would definitely try it, you might love it!

Not necessarily, there are many very interesting, complex mixtures that deserve your attention… I find the idea of mixing your chopped up cigar with tobacco and smoking it in a pipe truely fascinating.. MIKA27 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I myself have smoked and owned a few pipes, Stanwell, Lorenzo, Refbjerg, Vauen and whilst I do not mind pipe tobacco (My mix is Stanwell Millange (Sweet and fruity) with Vanilla "The Happiness mix") I still can not compare pipe and cigar as they are both different. Cigars are far more complex in taste however a pipe can be quite more relaxed and smooth. Holding a warm bowl in your palm whilst outside having a drink with friends or even alone is quite enjoyable. I would also recommend you buy a pipe and give it a try. Also... probably advisable you buy a pipe with a 9mm filter. Whilst I have owned pipes that are cheap as well as expensive, my favourite would be STANWELL. I currently enjoy my Stanwell 2006 Pipe of the year with 9mm filter. And I only just purchased a Lorenzo Angura 561 whilst in Chile.
bolivr Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I have a pipe and I've tried it a little but found there is quite a nack to getting the smoke right - temperature of the burn, the way the bowl is packed and so on. Round here the family prefer the aroma of an Habanos so that makes the cigar an easy choice.
