A truly cigar and fun packed day, yesterday. And no, there's no "hidden closet" here - just good old dirty fun ... Drove up to Cologne for half a day of smoking fine cigars with my old Belgian buddy-"lover" Frank at Pitter Heinrich's Casa. We started with 70/80's vintage Cuban Davidoffs, Chateau Haut Brion, courtesy of Andy Ryan/Rob Fox in Havana last month. A nice cigar that left my palate dry. Next was a custom rolled Lancero courtesy of Hannes, also from Havana last month, with a very special blend that included Medio Tiempo. Like the ones I smoked with Hannes in Havana, a very impressive cigar, full bodied, creamy and very aromatic but the last third left both Frank an me quite dizzy. Nevertheless we'd love to get our hands on a couple of full wheels of this cigar .... Time to have a light dinner. Back at the lounge we ended our Cologne rendezvous with the Cohiba Majestuosos from the Gala auction humidor. At the Centro Cultural Polo Montañez - Viñales : So it was evening and we moved over to take in the show. Surprise, our table was taken by a very large Evander Holyfield look-alike, one eye half closed and hands as large as a shovel. Cristal courage made me brave and I asked him WTF he was doing at my table. He meekly drawled out something like : Me was jus’ doin’ som takin’ care of youse table, my man, no worries – so I invited him to join us and have some beers with/on us, which he kindly agreed to. Believing he was a regional foreigner ( Haitian ?? ) I asked Jorge WTF a language the big guy was babbling. Well, Jorge explained that the guy was a local Piñareño guy and they were justly known and famous for being too dumb to speak. According to a Havana legend only 5% of the Piñareños are smart enough to think … Well, I kept that piece of information to myself so as to not offend Mr Holyfield who looked like a true Piñareño specimen of the 95% sort and we became friends. Especially tight friends after he arranged for a few of his girl-friends to keep us company at the table so as to keep all the other girl-friends from bothering us. Worked out peaches & cream. This time around I visited my friend and humidor artist Jose Ernesto Aguilera at his Humidores Habana workshop twice. Once with the Portmann group on Monday 24-th, the day the XVI Festival del Habano officially was inaugurated and again with my buddy Frank, who missed the first visit, on Wednesday 26-th February. I have documented the 2 visits on 2 different posts on purpose so the progress of the humidor work can be seen. Especially so on 3 of the humidors that were auctioned just days after our visit. The first is the Montecristo desk humidor which was auctioned at the Gala dinner on the 28-th, that is just 2 days after our last visit and after a starting bid of 10.000 € achieved a price at 170.000 €, the second is the square Cohiba humidor which can be seen during our second visit being readied in the open, it was also auctioned at the Gala dinner, starting bid was also 10.000 € and it went for 160.000 €.
