  1. Imagine my surprise finding the pierce county journal on the forum! I grew up near the pierce county line. I had an old pal whose parents lived in a little unincorporated town of maybe 20 people, several miles off any numbered highway with a trout stream flowing through the property. No town police to be found, and being on the county line, no county sheriffs or deputies bothered patrolling. Summers in high school were incredible. ATVs, dirt bikes, golf carts, fireworks, volleyball, and fishing. Kids would come by the carload from all the nearby towns to drink with us and camp out for days. The parties were legendary. Anyway, I had no idea they grew tobacco out that way. Now it’s just corn and soy beans and lots and lots of dairy cows.
  2. i was gifted the entire week off from work. rain, rain, rain in the forecast here for the next two days. kind of a bummer. we have an airbnb booked on a lake, but unsure how that’ll play out given the weather. ballgame on saturday. probably buy some sparklers or non-explosive fireworks for the toddler.
  3. Some pretty loose interpretations of the American revolution in this thread. Yeeesh. It had less to do with taxes, in principle, than it did with colonists having no say in the laws and economic policies in the colonies. The vast majority did not want war and revolution. They wanted to be treated as equals. The anti-tax movement in America, as we know it today, is not centuries old. It's decades old. I would recommend for further reading: The Permanent Tax Revolt The long and short of it is that people in the 1970s began a widespread, grassroots movement to protest their property taxes. During the great depression and the years following, many jurisdictions limited or exempted properties from taxes because of economic hardship or preferred class (war veterans, especially). Eventually politicians realized that "I'm going to cut your taxes" was a cheat code to get people to vote for them. So they grabbed onto that and held on for dear life for the last 40 years. How much is too much tax? Hell if I know. I pay my bill and move on with my life. If I see a problem with services that I rely on or observe, I send an email to my city councillor and let them know how I feel. Then I vote. Not much else to be done and whining about, it doesn't help anyone.
  4. Millennial here. I deleted Facebook in 2018, reactivated an account with no friends or photos or posts so I could join my private lounge’s Facebook group and get updates on events. Deleting it was one of the best decisions I ever made. When I see my friends and family, we really get to catch up and share photos and news of our lives. I can’t describe how much better it is to really feel like you’re actually catching up with someone, not them going “well, you probably saw my post…” don’t have an Instagram either. The downside is I sometimes get left out of big events organized on Facebook, but someone invariably texts me or my wife fills me in. 😄
  5. I mean, I'll take any good news even if it's couched in BS.
  6. i'm in the same boat as you. very much disliked the superiores. i thought RASS was the bees knees but after smoking through a cab of them and i'm not sure i need to smoke them again. however, i absolutely love the gigantes.
  7. This is actually a decent list that blends modern and some timeless albums. The Frank Ocean album is a masterpiece.
  8. I use twitter as my newspaper, carefully curated accounts I follow--journalists and I respect (not their news outlets), sports teams, some friends, infosec, foreign policy, and a few larger accounts. I do not use the "for me" section (algorithim) and instead read chronologically as tweets appear. I routinely unfollow accounts if I feel they're straying from what I find informative. If a story is big enough, I feel like it'll bubble up on my feed somewhere. I have considered subscribing to eliminate the ads which have gone from bad to worse (dropship companies, shitty mobile games, gold scams), but I can't bring myself to do it.
  9. I'd at least like to know if i could go into the shop, not buy a cigar, and smoke all day. I wouldn't need a membership at my private lounge if that is the case. I'm with you on this one, to an extent. It would annoy me to see someone abusing a system that other people honor. No sense in having a rule for everyone if everyone doesn't follow it. If you absolutely must know his deal, I'd just talk to the guy like normal. Eventually, ask him what he likes from the shop. Pretend you want a recommendation.
  10. The Full Recovery Recipe before bed: enormous glass(es) of water, your choice of munchies, ibuprofen, and four electrolyte capsules (i buy mine from Klean Athlete). I'm sure there are cheaper options out there, shop around. morning: ice cold shower. like that scene from the beginning of apocalypse now. do not even think about touching that hot water handle. 10 minutes of low-intensity exercise. just go walk or stumble around the neighborhood, preferably to the corner store. ONE gatorade or sports drink of your choice (full sugar) ONE protein shake small serving of yogurt, granola, and your choice of fruit (i go for blueberries), mixed in a bowl. caffeine of choice. I like a double espresso. nicotine after that routine, you will doubtless be seated on the porcelain goddess, requiring a second shower. you may now use hot water. shave. go about your day, consuming more water than normal. pray or beg for mercy. Hair of the Dog preferably at the nearest bar that serves breakfast: eggs your way, choice of meat, hashbrowns, caffeine of choice vodka and 7up, splash of orange juice--a Screw Up, AKA the poor man's mimosa repeat until satisfied optional: water
  11. I'd find something on Bond Roberts.
  12. Damn, we did our honeymoon on a cruise ship and I was under the impression there weren't any LCDH and had no idea this place existed. Several ports had been cancelled that I planned to stock up at (2022 cruising realities). Antigua was our favorite island by a longshot. We'll get back there someday.
  13. Wonderful memories of this era. I was a bit young to afford any of the PC gear, but my friends and I played hours and hours of system link LAN console games in our parents' basements every weekend. Social media and smart phones with good cameras became common near the end of college, so I feel like I was part of the last group of people to enjoy some of that old school gaming fun you see in these photos. Funny, our parents said the same thing about us spending all our time playing video games that parents are saying about kids and their phones today. We also went through the collective national freak out over violence in video games, attempts to ban games, etc.
  14. Stihl all the way for me.
  15. The Packers are one of the most conservative organizations, if not the most conservative, in the league. Personally, I am unsurprised that a rookie struggled in his first year. Yes, I was disappointed by his miss in last weekend's game. I think it would be foolish to cut bait at this point. He has an absolute cannon of a leg. They allowed all their young talent to work through their issues this season, including some horrible drops from receivers and equally horrible accuracy from Love early on. I don't see why they don't let him have another go in the upcoming season.
  16. My usual routine of advocating for Fahrenheit for air temperature/weather, Celsius for science: 0 and 100 in F are great numbers to measure "yeah, you're going to be totally miserable outside." they're more useful for the human experience of weather. That said, 4°F for a high, -15°F windchill here. no cigars will be consumed until next week when we return to the 30s. I tell ya, the bone-chilling winters do make you appreciate when it warms up. the first 60 and 70 degree days of the season here are like state holidays.
  17. Compared to Non-Cuban? no Compared to the rest of the Habanos catalog? yes
  18. I'm with you. I like the JL1 but always found the JL2 pretty bad, tbh.
  19. Darknet diaries, particularly episode 99 "the spy": Igor works as a private investigator in NYC. He's often sitting in cars keeping a distant eye on someone with binoculars. There's a bunch of other great ones in that series.
  20. Carlin and Chappelle were the easy top two choices for me for so long. I've seen Chappelle live 3 times at various points in his career. you are right, he is going down the "truth teller" road and, frankly, it's nearly impossible to watch him perform now. his first Netflix special was good but they've gone far downhill since then. it's veering into spoken word. I've got a pack of about 5 comedians i like at the number 2 slot now. no one sticks out, though.
  21. Tom Petty, 2010 Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul, MN. Took my mom as a mother's day present. He still had every ounce of it then. Rest in Peace. Rage Against the Machine with Queens of the Stone Age opening, 2007 Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Shortly after they reunited. Rained for hours. Lawn seating was a mud hill. People went bananas. Dan Auerbach, 2018 Palace Theater, Saint Paul, MN. He put together members of Elvis's touring band and took them on the road. Kamasi Washington, 2019. First Avenue, Minneapolis. Hootie and the Blowfish, 2019 Minnesota State Fair. Just a damn fun show on a beautiful late summer night. TOOL, 2010, Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul, MN. Gonna see them this month in the same venue. Awesome live band.
  22. that ref at the end of the KC NYJ game was just feeling left out. he wanted to play too!
  23. I don’t tip because society says I have to. All right, I mean I’ll tip if someone really deserves a tipping, if they really put forth the effort, I’ll give them something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds. I mean as far as I’m concerned they’re just doing their job. I’m very sorry the government taxes their tips. That’s messed up. That ain’t my fault. I mean it would appear that servers are one of the many groups the government screws over on a regular basis. Show me a piece of paper that says the government shouldn’t do that, I’ll sign it, put it to a vote, I’ll vote for it, but what I won’t do is play ball.
  24. i told my doctor exactly how many cigars i smoke per week and his response was this: ”i obviously cannot recommend you smoke cigars. but i am also not that concerned. if you feel the ‘need’ to go out and smoke all the time—every hour, on the hour—like you did with cigarettes, i want you to come to me. we will work on cessation strategies.” if he thought i had a heart condition or some other malady that would be worsened by my cigar smoking and told me to quit, i would quit.
  25. most people are talking about vaccines and masks, but what i'm really looking forward to are earplugs so i never have to listen to this pedantic debate again. when my doctor tells me that doing something is in my best interest, i do it. i'm not arrogant enough to presume i know more than him. it makes for a much easier life. if i catch a stray from bad advice, oh well. at least they'll learn from my misfortune and help more people in better ways in the future.
