matt152 Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Hi Guys & Girls, I am trying to find a supplier of Spanish Cedar in Brisbane, but every timber supplier I talk to always gives me one of two answers, they are "what the hell is Spanish Cedar" or "We can sell you Western Red Cedar". If anyone knows where I can buy some I would much appreciate it. See I live in Dalby and the climate out here is not the best for keeping cigars I have a humidor box that I bought from Rob and it worked fine when I lived in Brisbane, but out here it is either to cold and the humidity drops down to 50% during the day in winter and worse at night, or it is 360 in summer and you have to have the aircon on to keep from going mad from the heat, which dries out the humidity. So I have found that a wine fridge set to its max temp of 200 works well, but the problem is that it is plastic lined and the moisture condenses on the ceiling and then drips on to my cigars. I was thinking if I can line the inside with cedar I will stop this as the timber will absorb the moisture before it condenses. That’s the plan anyway, hope it works. Thanks Matt.
El Presidente Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Hi Matt. I hope you are well mate :-) Contact Craig Harris of HARRIS Furniture at Sumner Park Brisbane. Craig did some humidors for me at one time and he had good supplies of Spanish Cedar. I recall is was very tough to source.
Trevor2118 Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 » I am trying to find a supplier of Spanish Cedar in Brisbane. Hi Matt. Also available in Qld is Lazarides Speciality Timbers in Banyo Qld. They can supply Spanish Cedar technical name "cedrela odorata". They call it South American Cedar (spanish cedar is not from Spain). Others call it cigar box cedar. They can supply rough sawn or dressed to size as required. Not cheap, about $4,000 per cubic meter rough sawn?? Link here: http://www.lazaridestimberagencies.com/imptimber.php Regards, Trevor. :-)

Matt, Spanish cedar, as you've seen, is very expensive. Most humidors are not made completely out of spanish cedar. They use furniture grade mahogany plywood. It's not nearly as aromatic as spanish cedar, but it reacts nicely to temp and humidity shifts. It is very inexpensive and IMO a great alternative if you're going to store boxes already made of spanish cedar.
