CoCigarSmoker Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Bolivar Coronas Junior I woke up a little bit late this morning. I had every intention of reviewing a slightly larger cigar and spending a little more time on the deck, but alas sleep got the better of me. So here I sit with a lovely Boli Coronas Junior. This cigar is a young one and I’d guess was produced fairly late in 2014. However, I don’t have the box code because this is one of my last 10 or so singles that I purchased a short while back. Construction Compared to the Boli Petit Corona that I reviewed recently this cigar appears to be much better made. The body of the cigar is firm to the touch, and no soft spots were detected. You can tell this cigar is properly filled and there is little give in the wrapper. There are a couple small veins but nothing noteworthy. Pre-light The draw on this little cigar is flawless. The construction and proper level of filler truly shows through. On the cold draw bold notes of toasted tobacco and earth come through with a hint of spice and pepper. There was also just a touch of a sweet finish to the cigar, maybe hazelnut? First Third So far the thing that blows me away about this cigar is the volume of smoke it produces. Big mouthfuls of silky smooth viscous smoke, HOORAY! Right away the cigar leads into that bolivar spiciness. But it’s not a huge level of spice or pepper; just enough to where you know you’re not smoking a Fonseca Ha. At first, the beginning draws were somewhat one dimensional, but then notes of espresso, just a hint of hazelnut shine through. As I made my way through the first third the espresso flavor became creamy and the spiciness settled down a bit, but still stayed on the palate which I rather enjoy. I’m more of a med or full bodied cigar smoker and I like those bold flavors to kick around throughout each smoking experience. Second Third Working into the second third reveals a slightly new flavor profile involving a subtle characteristic of Cuban twang. I wouldn’t quite describe this as the traditional barnyard or hay flavor that we all know and love, but almost that flavor but combined with a bit of acidity. The flavor is a welcome change as I really enjoy a cigar that evolves through the smoking experience. The volume of smoke continues to impress and coat the entire palate. Brief notes of hazelnut appear and are swept away, replaced by leather and earth. The spiciness returns here and there in what appears to be a perfectly balanced amount. Final Third I as I work through the final third of this cigar the flavor of the hour is toasted tobacco and espresso. The spiciness is smoothed out with notes of leather but there isn’t much sweetness or hazelnut that comes forward anymore. I really feel that this cigar has evolved into three separate experiences which I find wonderful and complex. I’ve been smoking this cigar much faster than I normally do and up until now haven’t noticed any adverse effects as far as the heat of the burn or nicotine build up. However, as I get deeper into the last portion of this cigar, things are starting to heat up a bit more than normal. I won’t say that I’ve been rushing but I will admit I’m not much for smoking at this rate. Perhaps I’m just destined to plod along like the proverbial Tortoise versus the hair. Overall Total time spent smoking this cigar was right at 45-50 minutes. The construction of this cigar was second to none. Now I’ve had better constructed cigars before, but for such a small and relatively cheap smoke I’m thoroughly impressed with the dark chocolate brown wrapper, the firmness of the filler, the smooth ease of the draw, and the wonderful complexity and changes through the first, second, and final thirds. This is definitely another box buy for me and I look forward to having a more of these on hand. I’m really enjoying these smaller vitolas and can’t wait to have a good representation of these smaller coronas, corona juniors, and petit coronas on hand for when time is of the essence! I don’t think you can go wrong with this cigar and I can’t wait to make room on the credit card and add a box of these to my stash. Cheers guys and I hope you are all off to the races with a stellar Easter weekend. I hope to have more time allotted to cigars this weekend and if all goes well I’m looking forward to some more diverse Vitola’s and Marcas for my upcoming reviews. Thanks, Seth 4
