Ginseng Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Came across these article and blog recently. Perhaps old news to those in the know, but caught me by surprise. Indiana Factory Distillery American whiskey Wilkey
TypicalSituation Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 This was just on npr the other day. I hadn't heard before that. Frankly made me kind of sad.
Habana Mike Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 So there really is no Santa Claus? Begins research on marketing own artisan small-batch cleverly named whisky......
sengjc Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Interesting read and quite insightful for the newbie American whiskey enthusiast. I guess I'll be sticking to the "tried and tested", for now at least until there is more control on what constitutes as "craft whiskey". Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Colt45 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Something similar is done with beer as well - some "breweries" have their beer contract brewed and canned / bottled elsewhere. Bulk wine is big business.

Bulk wine is big business. True about beer though these guys generally come up with their own recipes. The whiskey boys are buying stuff that's been around years before they thought 'hey, I'll open a distillery!'
headstand Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Thanks for the links. I'm surprised, but then again I tend to be naive.
Colt45 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 True about beer though these guys generally come up with their own recipes. The whiskey boys are buying stuff that's been around years before they thought 'hey, I'll open a distillery!' No doubt the beers are typically brewed to recipe. I've been told that one of the biggest problems for smaller breweries is the cost of a bottling / canning line. If I understand the article correctly, you can buy various whiskey recipes (though it doesn't seem you can stipulate your own). For me, in a way, it's somewhat deceptive on both fronts unless it is made clear you don't produce your own beer / spirit. I guess one of the things for me is the term "craft" - I don't feel it always equates to better.
Lotusguy Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Not surprised in the least - people are asking to be taken when Pappy or other crap goes for 10x MSRP on the secondary market.
TiminBC Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Is this not sort of like a merchants scotch? A distillery makes a line for a merchant? Perhaps less transparent that the scotch example.
