Maplepie Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 One small knicker on the forum has always been the 'hot' threads. Looking at the watering hole, everything is "hot" except bad joke threads and some pinned ones. I mean, If i can start threads and have them be "hot", i think something is off here... Is there anything to be done or is this just an IP.board software built-in mechanism that can't be tweaked? Should it be changed or do i just need to find a life?
mikek Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 It;s been over 110 here in Vegas, so any thread I start should be smoldering!
Colt45 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 It's not the heat, it's the humidity. (I imagine a thread becomes hot simply after a certain number of posts are made in it. I haven't paid much attention to the bells and whistles)
bradbrennan Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 just need to find a life? I think it flags "hot" at about 15 replies
Maplepie Posted July 13, 2014 Author Posted July 13, 2014 (I imagine a thread becomes hot simply after a certain number of posts are made in it. I haven't paid much attention to the bells and whistles) taht's what i thought. Brad uses his life and dedicates it to science in his post: I think it flags "hot" at about 15 replies but my question remains: any way to bump that number up? if it's 15, could we bump it to like 30, or to 45? i've essentially tuned "the 'hot' word beside the thread" out like a ticking clock. would be nice if it could mean something again...
bradbrennan Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 I knew what you meant I'm probably on here too much...but on a serious note, start a couple topics for us, IMHO, I think we could use some more fun topics!

bradbrennan Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 I'm thinking if you commit to fly to Vegas for a herf , I'd definitely attend at least to confirm your gender! And to really see how old Skyfall is. My kids made me watch Bad Grandpa last night, made me think of him
Colt45 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 i've essentially tuned "the 'hot' word beside the thread" out like a ticking clock. would be nice if it could mean something again... Interesting for me...... Again, I've really never paid much mind to the icons, etc. But I suppose it comes down to fundamental "philosophy" re: FOH - I've pretty much always viewed the threads of FOH as discussions versus FOH as a bulletin board to post "stuff". So in my green skied, blue grassed universe, the icons and associated bells and whistles mean little - I give them no consideration when reading / becoming involved with a discussion. But times do / have changed - my views are my own. I surely don't try to re-live or recreate the past...... Flavors of the week come and go - classic never goes out of style.
AlastairE Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I think it flags "hot" at about 15 replies Correct mate - at 15 replies it will flag as "hot" I can bump it up on the admin side with little hassle, but I'll run it by Rob first. Maplepie, did you want me to look into that for you mate?
Habana Mike Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Correct mate - at 15 replies it will flag as "hot" I can bump it up on the admin side with little hassle, but I'll run it by Rob first. Maplepie, did you want me to look into that for you mate? I agree this could use some fine-tuning.... Maybe X posts in a certain time frame or something like that. I'd expect only a half dozen or so HOT topics at any particular time
AlastairE Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I agree this could use some fine-tuning.... Maybe X posts in a certain time frame or something like that. I'd expect only a half dozen or so HOT topics at any particular time As far as I can tell, the 'hot' thread indicator is purely based on thread replies, and I will have to liaise with our IT guys if there is capability for time to be factored in. Right now however, I can jack up the number to make this more 'exclusive' and therefore more relevant when looking for 'hot' topics.
Maplepie Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Brilliant! You deserve a raise, alleyway Maplepie, did you want me to look into that for you mate? Indeed i do! Run it by RobbyBoy and i'll even shoot him a PM. Perhaps 30 or 40 is a good number? I mean 1 in 10 posts being 'hot' seems too much on paper, even. But i don't know? What do you gents think? Maybe X posts in a certain time frame or something like that. would be a good tweak idea!

Too easy mate - will chase this up for you with Rob and our IT guys. If we can only support no. of posts, we wouldn't want to make the no. too excessively large, but if posts within a certain timeframe can be done, I'll reassess.
Maplepie Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Alleyway! any word on what Bobbert's being saying on this matter?
AlastairE Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Alleyway! any word on what Bobbert's being saying on this matter? Happy to raise the count post to a higher number mate, but unfortunately there is no support for 'post/per amount of time' to be factored in. You won't get exactly what you wanted, but it's a start When we have to upgrade the website down the track, and if this support becomes available, I will have this tapped on for you. What number shall we start at? 45...?
Habana Mike Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I think perhaps 30 would be a good start, see how it goes. One can always look at the original post date to see how recent it is. This is much appreciated guys!
Maplepie Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 i was thinking 50. i thought 30 was a good number originally (work twice as hard) but still 40% of threads would pass that within a day or two. 45 seems to be a good middle zone (one person says 50. one person says 30. one person says 45. the average is 38 so let's round it up to 50 ) Jeremy was never good at statistics!
AlastairE Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I'm going to lock in 45 for the time being I can change this whenever (larger/smaller depending on the reviews) Cheers Mike and Jer 1
Maplepie Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Brilliant! Again, you need a raise, Alleyway!! That's significantly better!!! Now work on getting me those H. Upmann Epicures... 1
