Jefferson Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I over the last few years have really grown to like Rye whiskey. Up until about two years ago all you ever saw out here in the hinterlands was Rittenour, and you had to really look to find a bottle of that. But now, with its gaining popularity we're seeing more variety. One of my regular go to bottles these days is Bulleit Rye. Good stuff neat, or on a single ice cube. 1
Habana Mike Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Yes, I like a good Rye. Especially for Manhattans and Sazeracs. Nice on the rocks too. Only one I could initially find was the Jim Beam but there are quite a few more around lately. Lately I've had Redemption, Hudson, Knob Creek and Van Winkle.
KJND Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I enjoy Bulleit Rye as well as there bourbon. Also like Rittenhouse very much. Still trying to locate some Baby Saz and may pick up a Handy in the next week or two if the bottle I found is still there when I go back. I like my Ryes with a cube or two of ice...
dangolf18 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Bulleit is me and my friends' drink of choice when going out. Good stuff!

Nice, the Knob Creek is on my short list, it just started showing up here. Didn't know Van Winkle had a rye out, that's probably good I'm thinking. Is it pricey, Mike?

Agreed, rye gets dangerously drinkable with a smidge of melted ice.
Kruz Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 If you ever have a chance give High West a try. Small batch distillery based out of Utah. So far I have only had their Rendezvous Rye (amazing stuff) and want to find more by them.

Had it at a bar so don't rightly know what a bottle goes for.
Jefferson Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 Yeah, the Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 year old. Had it at a bar so don't rightly know what a bottle goes for. Gotcha.
Deran Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I just got the VW rye at a shop in SF for $90. Only had one bottle or I would have bought more. Can't seem to find VW of any kind around these parts.
ayedfy Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I love baby saz, but my friend who is obsessed with ryes and American whiskies swears by Rittenhouse.
fokker4me Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 If you have not tried Sazerac rye you must. Retails for $22-$25 in NJ a bottle and is a great option neat. Their 18 year is AWSOME. Its been the same batch just small release every year. Rittenhouse is OK everyday type stuff but not like the Sazerac. Tom Handy is 132.4% do very strong but great flavor after the burn. I had Whistle Pig and thought it was good but not worth the $65-$80 price tag it commands.
BlackIrish Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Redemption and Bulleit are my usual pours. I've occasionally had a Rittenhouse, or if you really want to slum, Old Overholt.
fokker4me Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I've recently had Old Potrero from anchor distiling company great stuff.
fokker4me Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Yeah I've had the whistle pig. There is a whole thread about it from about four months ago.
khomeinist Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Rittenhouse is superior to Saz. Handy is nice for a flavor explosion. Saz 18 is not recommended at retail price. Bulleit, Templeton, and several other ryes are sourced from excess production at a distillery in Indiana last time I checked. A lot of comedy in the spirits game. The packaging often obscures the actual origin of the spirit. I could go on and on. There are very few large-scale whisky distilleries in the USA, yet so many brands......
fokker4me Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I'd have to disagree on the Rittenhouse vs Saz debate .while Rittenhouse is good and in my rotation Sazerac is great. Now truthfully the Sazerac 18 I think is over-rated. Its not bad, just over-rated and hyped. Michters Rye is good not great but Black Maple Hills Rye is awesome stuff. It's just hard to find. khomeinist Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Yeah. Clearly personal taste issue with Rittenhouse vs Sazerac. Both are mixers in my book. I don't rate many ryes as sippers
TM-US Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 You guys should try the E. H. Taylor straight rye. Amazing stuff. very complex and tasty, with that characteristic rye sweetness. It doesn't have the fire of the Sazerac rye, although I have not tried Sazerac 18. I rate the E. H. Taylor above the Thomas Handy which is too fiery foe me.
bolivr Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Been enjoying the Wild Turkey Rye here. Looks like I need to try the Bulleit. It's the only other rye I have seen in these parts.
fokker4me Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 what rye would you drink straight. I guess I don't have as refined of a palate as both of those are sippers with a cube for me. Yeah. Clearly personal taste issue with Rittenhouse vs Sazerac. Both are mixers in my book. I don't rate many ryes as sippers
fokker4me Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I second that as I was enjoying a long pour of that a few nights ago. Can't beat that for the price. You guys should try the E. H. khomeinist Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I could do Handy or the Taylor with a cube or splash. There are other rare bottlings that are sippers. Most of the readily available rye is best for mixing though in my opinion. I contrast this with bourbon, where several common bottles under 40$ US are quite enjoyable neat.... I enjoy rye, but I prefer my rye in a bourbon mash....
