Is the H upmann mag48 past it's prime?

Recommended Posts

So I got a cab of these about a year ago and have been loving them. I'm half way through the cab and am I thinking about tracking down another one while I still can even though I know it'll be a year before I get to smoking them. Now, I have heard some talk about how the mag48 is over the hill already. So I'm wondering if anyone here agrees and if so, how fast is that decline is gonna be? If I know I'm gonna be putting these down for at least a year should I just get a couple of boxes of petit coronas instead?

I'd imagine it has something to do with the fact that a lot of ELs tend to have similar profiles regardless of the marca they represent.

Sorta like the EL program has it's own blend that the tweak slightly and then put a different band on every year

Get another box while they last. The Mag 48 is one of my all time favorites! I love the milk chocolate! I picked up an extra box because they're not making anymore and I have not seen a decline in anyway.

Never was in its prime IMO. And I love Upmann. Classic Upmann is something this cigar is definitely not.

Signed,

Bitter EL program hater guy

The Mag 48 is the only one I own. I don't get the hype and extra premium they often carry. Just happened to pick this one up for a reasonable price.

If there's one feature this cigar does NOT show, it's bitterness.

I think you may have misinterpreted my use of the adjective. Had to do with my personal feelings on the entire EL program as opposed to the flavor profile of the actual Mag 48.

oh ok then, sorry about that. Actually I agree to some extent, the results of this program is rather… incertain (for my taste).

No one said it wasn't a good cigar at the moment, even if it was a better cigar 2 years ago…

This is the core of my concern. I like the Mag 48 a lot, but if its on the down hill already, I'm worried that in two years it will straight up fall off a cliff.

confused.gif the 48 was a bargain few years ago. Today it sells (online) at the price of a churchill or a DC…

But on the other hand, they aren't that much more expensive than the aged mag 46s floating around, and they haven't been aged in cardboard either. I would be amazed if I could find a cab of Mag 46s from 09 for the price the 48s are going for now.

They are good and not so good boxes out there.

From my experience from my box they are still getting better. Smoking very good atm.

No idea how they will be in a year or two.

Remember Rob mentioned last year that they may be at their peak.

Enjoying them but would not go for another box.

I definitely think they are on the decline. How fast is almost impossible to determine, it's not a precise curve.

If you want to play safe go for a cab of Connoisseur No.1 plus a box of 10 Hoyo Short Pyramid EL 2011 if you crave the "EL flavor".

Yes,this entirely.

This! I'm down to the last 3 sticks of my box and I think they're still very good, haven't noticed a decline yet to be honest. Not planning on buying another box of these.
