Cohiba Siglo VI KMM 11/04

CIGAR: Cohiba Siglo VI

DATE: 6/28/09

SIZE: 52 X 5 7/8

SHAPE: Parejo

ORIGIN: Cuba

AGE: KMM 11/04

AMBIANCE: A day off, sitting in my chair bouncing between Wimbelton, the Sox, and a half decent movie, The International.

BEVERAGE: Coffee, Trader Joe's Bay Blend, and ice water

APPEARANCE: Medium color, flawless wrapper, no soft spots. This cigar looks like a winner. There's no denying this cigar looks great.

PRE-LIGHT: The Siglo VI was firm and the minimal clip I gave the foot left the smallest impression of a divot I have ever seen on a Havana cigar. The draw was perfect. the cigar had that firm pull that gave air, very satisfying.

FIRST-HALF: Creamy spice. No grass. Strong nicotine in this one. At 4.5 years I could tell that the Siglo was potent.

SECOND-HALF: Wow! This cigar is full of flavor. Smooth as all get out, the spice never left and it showed that Cuban "twang" in spades. I don't exhale through the nose, but I blow smoke out of my mouth under my nose and the flavor enveloped my head. I slowed down and began to take small draws to savor the cigar.

THIRD-HALF: I smoked the Siglo VI down to about an inch, This cigar had the nicotine power and strength of flavor that I associate with Cohiba.

I like Cohibas, have a few in my humidor, but I don't smoke them very often. I love what happens to a potent cigar when age takes off the rough edges off. I don't get bean flavors, I don't get chocolate, but I got potent tangy tobacco that was creamy smooth and never harsh. The down side to the cigar is that at a 52 ring gage, it is too stinking big. I found it to be uncomfortable in my mouth. Like many here, as I get more experience with cigars I find myself preferring thinner ring cigars, I never liked the robusto shape having always preferred a corona gorda. The VI cemented my preference for less bulky vitolas. This was the third Siglo VI I smoked over three years and I love what time has done to them, they are very good cigars. Another year or two and I think they will be stellar, so I give them

4 smoke rings

with the potential of 5 in a few years.

I've tried a few and never really found them to be anything special - though I've not tried one with much age.

I agree with you on the size - I think this, more than anything, has kept me from re-visiting these.

have to say that a good sig vi, and almost all of the ones i have smoked have been very good, is a thing of rare beauty. to be fair, most are mine have come from the 03 vintage which i gather was a bit special for sig vi, but even the others i've loved.

Nice review and good observations! I find this ring gauge to be too much for me these days. I much prefer the SIG V.

That being said I do not find them to be strong. Medium or medium full at best. But that is a subjective thing.

I have been smoking some '08s that have been mixed construction wise. Ten count box. But the ones that have been on have been on (about 60-40 so far) are damn enjoyable. I just find the thinner ring gauges to be more to my liking these days.

Great descriptive review.

I have been going through a box of aged VI from 04 and while they are not quite up to the sheer magnificence of first release 03 VI they are not too far short.

I agree that the sheer gauge of the VI is off putting to me. Just a personal viiewpoint.

Thanks for coroberating my opinion of the Siglo VI. I haven't had an '03, I wish I had the opportunity to get a box. I'm sure the debut release cigars are special. The first two I smoked from my box were clearly too young to smoke, 4/07-1/08, and the cigar I reviewed proved once again that pushing five years of box age is where I start to get what I like out of Cuban cigars.

thanks for the perspective Rob. Do you feel the 04's will be where the 03's are down the road or are they just a notch below on quality or a difference in blend?
